The total synthesis of natural products is a vital area of research in pharmaceutical development, and solvent purity is key to ensuring that the synthetic route proceeds smoothly. Research into the total synthesis of natural products has long been hampered by solvent impurities: given the lengthy synthetic routes and the sensitivity of intermediates, even trace impurities in solvents can cause a single step in a multi-step reaction to fail. This not only wastes substantial amounts of raw materials and time but also delays the research process. Many bioactive natural products are difficult to synthesise due to solvent-related issues, creating a bottleneck that hinders the translation of research findings into practical applications.
To address this challenge, the School has introduced a solvent purification system from Beijing Yifeng Technology Co., Ltd. This system is capable of simultaneously purifying multiple solvents, supplying various high-purity solvents in real time to meet the demands of total natural product synthesis. It thoroughly removes interfering substances such as water and impurities from the solvents, ensuring that every reaction step takes place in a pure solvent environment. The system employs automated control to precisely regulate solvent purity and flow rates, accommodating the demands of multi-step sequential reactions. This has significantly enhanced synthesis efficiency and reduced experimental failures caused by solvent-related issues.
The commissioning of the Yifeng Solvent Purification System has injected new momentum into the Faculty’s research on the total synthesis of natural products. The purified solvents have drastically reduced interference from impurities in each reaction step, significantly improving the yield and purity of intermediates. The synthesis cycle has been shortened by nearly half compared to previous methods, and synthesis challenges previously caused by solvent impurities have been successfully resolved. Researchers are now able to focus on optimising synthetic routes and modifying the structures of natural products, successfully synthesising a variety of bioactive natural products and providing vital support for the development of natural medicines. Research pathways once obstructed by solvent impurities have become unimpeded under the empowerment of the Yifeng system, enabling deeper and more efficient exploration of total synthesis of natural products. This also demonstrates Yifeng Technology’s commitment and responsibility to supporting pharmaceutical innovation through technology.
